Rising boldly above the banks of the Ottawa River, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is the largest and quite possibly the most impressive of its kind in Canada. The 270,000 square-foot museum, which is planned to grow to well over 300,000 square feet by 2017, is divided into four levels, each of which houses a number of fascinating exhibits.

The second level alone features a children's museum, three special exhibitions, a boutique, and both a standard theatre and an IMAX theatre. Most of the first floor is dedicated to the rich cultural history of Aboriginal peoples in Canada, and its collection of totem poles is the largest in the world. Depicting scenes ranging from early Norse settlers in Newfoundland to a 19th-century Ontario shipyard, the Canada Hall on the third level is the museum's most popular gallery, and if you'd like to learn more about famous Canadians like John A. Macdonald or Tommy Douglas, head up to the fourth level where you'll find Face to Face, a detailed exhibit that has artifacts, recordings, and photographs of 27 individuals who helped shape this nation.
