Free Books On-Line
There are vast numbers of free books on-line. They are mostly from government sites or charitable historical societies. I thought it would be helpful to list some of the more obscure ones in this forum. You never know on which pages of these books information about your ancestor may be. I have been pleasantly surprised many times.

Here you may find out if your ancestor had any dealing with the law. It does not give you particulars of the offence, but it does give you dates and names.

Records of the Compagnie des Indes Occidentales - 1667 to 1668“Papier terrier de la Compagnie des Indes Occidentales”, 1667-1668 If you have any ancestors that had any dealings with the fur monopoly «Compagnie des Indes Occidentales» in New France from 1667 - 1668. You may find him in here. This book transcribes many of the contracts that the comapany had with the inhabitants here. They affected everyone. There is an index in the back. The book is written in french. The «Our Roots» web site does not provide you with a pdf. You have to look for the page you want on-line, then save it down to your computer.Here I have found information my ancestors Louis Sedilot, Nicolas Marsolais, Jacques Loyer,Noel Morin, Pierre Mahue, Medard Chouart just to name a few. Enjoy.

Judgements & Deliberations of the Soveign Council in New France - Volume 1If you have found any skeletons or nifty tidbits on your French Canadian Ancestors you may find it in here. Written in french. Judgements & Deliberations of the Souverain Council in New France Volume 1 Jugements et délibérations du Conseil souverain de la Nouvelle-France; publiés sous les auspices de la Législature de Québec .. (1885) This is how it is described in the «Internet Archive Library» Website........ Imprint of v. 5-6: Québec, Impr. J. Dussault, 1889-91
The publication of these manuscripts ceased with 1716, and analytical tables covering the periods 1717-1723 and 1730-1739 were published, 1892-93
The name of the Coucil was changed in 1703, by order of the king, from Conseil souverain de la Nouvelle-France to Conseil supérieur de Québec. The latter name accordingly, appears instead of the former on the t.p. of v. 5-6

Judgements & Deliberations of the Soverign Council of New France, Volume 2.Judgements & Deliberations of the Souveign Council of New France, Volume 2. There isnt really an index of names that I can find so far, but there is a chronelogical list starting at page 1056 for the years 1676 to 1686. It is a great place to confirm any references you have found about any run ins with the law during that time period. Some of the passages are written in ye old french which may be a bit problematic but still readable. While looking for census information the series of books by Benjamin Sulte, called «Histoire des canadiens-français, 1608-1880 : origine, histoire, religion, guerres, découvertes, colonisation, coutumes, vie domestique, sociale et politique, développement, avenir (1882),» was brought to my attention. So far I have found the 1666, 1667, & 1681 Census. I never have any luck getting the web site feature here to work so I am going to do it bit by bit and hope for the best Step 1, Search for the author, . 1716 Census for Quebec CityIn the 1716 Census for Quebec City, by L. Beaudet, there is an alphabetical listing of the surnames found in the 1716 Census in the rear of the book, along with its corresponding page number. The information you can find out is the street they lived on in 1716, the names and ages of the occupants and their occupations. The book is written in french, but extensive knowledge of the language is not required to make use of this book. If the above link does not work google «Open Library.org».
