Nova Scotia Timeline
Does anyone have information on historical events for Nova Scotia for those of us who do not live there?

Here is my Timeline for Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
Does anyone else have more information about the History of Pictou County that I can use as a timeline in my family tree?

Pictou County Time Line

January 1770 - There were 120 people living in Pictou Township
July 1773 - The Hector Leaves Loch Broom, Scotland,
15 September 1773 - The Hector Arrives in Pictou
1763 Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island were annexed to Nova Scotia.
1773 The first Scottish settlers arrived.
1749 - Halifax, Nova Scotia's capital city, was founded
1755 - Expulsion of the Acadians
May 4, 1783 - First Loyalist Landing at Port Roseway (Shelburne),N.S.
1784 - N.B. is created
1784 - Race Riot in Shelbourne & Bridgetown,N.S.
September 1803 - Built Bridge Across East River
1806 - Ferry Service Between Pictou & P.E.I begins
1809 - Land patents granted in Pictou County called the Philadelphia Grant
1815–1850 Some 55,000 immigrants, mostly Scottish and Irish, came to the province.
1818 Dalhousie University was founded in Halifax.
1820 Cape Breton was annexed to Nova Scotia.
1821 - Pictou County Schooner Shipbuilding began by Captain George McKenzie
1824 - Cole Point Light House Built
1827, 1838 - Built New Glasgow Bridge
1829 - A horse tramway or light rail in Nova Scotia had been in operation since
1829
1840 - Captain George McKenzie built 34 vessels in New Glasgow. Other
shipbuilder was Captain Thomas Graham
1840 – Hamilton’s Bakery Established
1847 - Typhus outbreak
1848 - Irish Potato Famine
1848 Nova Scotia was the first British colony where the principle of responsible
government was recognized.
1856 - Pictou Iron Foundry Established
1857 - Ottawa becomes the capital of Canada
1861 - The Grand Trunk Railway is completed
April 1867 – Inter-colonial Railway was completed going from New Glasgow to
Truro
1867 - Confederation, Canada is made up of Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, &
Nova Scotia
1867 - Matheson & Co Ltd – Acadian
1870s - Pictou Gas Works Established
1871 - Pictou Boot & Shoe Company Founded
1873 - New Glasgow Business Sector Destroyed by Fire
1876 - The railway from Halifax to Quebec was completed.
February 1877 - September 1887 - Eastern Extension Railroad, New Glasgow &
Fishers Grant (Pictou Landing)
1880 - Eggs sold for a dime a dozen, butter for 17¢ a lbs, molasses at 50¢ cents a
gallon, roast beef for 8¢ a lbs & a soup bone sold for 5¢.
12 April 1882 - N.S. Steel Company Established in Trenton
1889 - Charles, Elizabeth & Nellie Smith Came to Canada from England
1892 - John E Garret Ltd founded
1902 - Maritime Steel & Foundry founded
1914 - McPherson Foundry founded
1917 - New Glasgow Foundry founded
1917 - The Halifax Explosion
1919 - Canadian National Railways incorporated
11 November 1919 - WWI Ended
Spanish Flue Kills 100,000 people
24 October 1921, Bluenose wins International Fisherman’s Trophy
1921 - Legal adoption started in Ontario
The Dirty Thirties
WWII
31 March 1949 – Nfld. joins Canada
1950 - Start of Korean Conflict
17 November 1961 - Saskatchewan enacts Medicare
15 February 1965 - Maple Leaf becomes Canada’s flag
October 1970 - F.L.Q. Crisis
4 June 1976 - Canada announces a 200-mile coastal fishing zone
1989 – NAFTA goes into effect
1992 – Atlantic Canada’s cod-fishing industry is shut down due to over fishing
1992 – Westray Coal Mine explosion in Plymouth, N.S.
